Oral Roberts Rides Hot Bats to Victory Over Baseball

CORPUS CHRISTI – Oral Roberts scored six runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back in a 17-6 victory over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team on Sunday at Chapman Field. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Islanders (25-20, 14-7 Southland).

The Golden Eagles (23-20, 10-11) saw seven different batters notch multi-hit games, while Anthony Sequeira went a perfect 5-for-5 with two RBIs and four runs scored. Tyler Boss also had a big day at the plate, as he drove in five runs, going 3-for-5 from the dish.

The two through five hitters for the Islanders did the damage offensively, as they combined to go 5-for-14 at the plate with all six of the teams RBIs.

ORU got six runs on six hits and three walks in the opening frame. Tyler Boss delivered the biggest blow, drilling a bases-clearing double to put the Golden Eagles ahead 3-0 before tallying an out. Sequeira added an RBI single and Audie Afenir posted a two-run double to push the lead to 6-0 after one.

The Islanders came back with two runs in the bottom of the first, as Cody Stephens delivered a two-run single to center to cut the deficit to 6-2. But ORU added another six-spot in the top of the second, this time delivering seven hits. Sequiera's RBI double, Logen Domenico's RBI double and a two-run single for Boss were the biggest hits of the frame.

A&M-Corpus Christi continued to fight, though, scoring three runs on four hits in the bottom of the second. Brandon Tierney delivered a two-run single for the first two scores, and Tyler Ware added an RBI groundout to score the final run of the inning.

The team's then went back and forth over the next three innings, with ORU plating single runs in the third and the fifth, while the Islanders got one in the fourth to send us to the sixth inning with the Golden Eagles up 14-6.

However, the run in the bottom of the fourth for the Islanders would be their final run of the game, as ORU tacked on three more in the seventh after a scoreless sixth to secure the run-rule victory to avoid being swept at Chapman Field.

The Islanders will play their final midweek game of the year, traveling to Waco, Texas, on Wednesday to take on Baylor, before traveling over to Abilene Christian for a three-game set to resume Southland Conference play.
