CORPUS CHRISTI – Boone Mokry pitched seven strong innings to lead UTSA to a 10-2 victory over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team on Tuesday night at Chapman Field. The Roadrunners (22-11) earned the season series win, 2-1, over the Islanders (17-18).
Horacio Correa III went 3-for-6 with two RBI and two runs, while John Wellborn went 2-for-4 and scored three times to lead the UTSA offense, which collected 13 hits on the night. That was more than enough support for Mokry, who scattered six hits and did not allow a walk to improve to 1-1.
The Islanders used eight pitchers in the loss, with starter Gavin Williamson tossing two shutout innings. A.J. Flores (1 2/3 innings), Jacob Dorris (1 2/3) and Dalton D'Spain (1) each posted scoreless outings in the loss. Brandon Tierney and Brett Burner each went 2-for-4 for A&M-Corpus Christi, with Tierney knocking in two runs.
UTSA delivered the first blow with a run in the top of the third. C.J. Pickering began the frame with a double to the left-center field gap, and two batters later, Correa drove him home with a single to center for a 1-0 lead. Things got hairier for Jared Jordan on the mound, as an error and a misplay loaded the bases with one away, but Jesse Baker bounced into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
The Roadrunners added to that in a big way in the fourth, putting a four-spot on the board to make it 5-0, doing all the damage with two outs. Pickering came to the dish with a runner on second and two away, and drew a walk to extend the inning. Wellborn then delivered an RBI single to right center, making it a 2-0 ballgame. An error on Josh Garza then resulted in the third run of the game, and Mike Warren capped off the rally with a two-run single to make it a five-run lead.
Meanwhile, Mokry kept on rolling on the mound for the Roadrunners, delivering 1-2-3 innings in the second and fourth, and limiting the Islanders to three baserunners in the other three frames to maintain the 5-0 lead through five innings.
In the top of the sixth, UTSA tacked on two more runs to push the lead to 7-0. The visitors loaded the bases with one out to chase Thomas Casey from the game, as Dorris came on in relief. Dorris got the first man he faced on a popup, but Baker sent a sinking liner to right center that fell into the gap for a two-run double and a seven-run advantage.
The Roadrunners pushed across three more runs in the top of the eighth off A.J. Longoria. Wellborn singled to lead off the frame, stole second, and came around to score on a base knock by Correa to make it 8-0. After a strikeout, Longoria surrendered a walk and a hit batsman to load the bases with one away. Tony Ramirez then delivered a single just inside the third-base bag to plate two runs and push the lead to 10-0.
A&M-Corpus Christi finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth. Burner led off the frame with an infield single to end Mokry's night after seven strong innings, and Logan Onda came on to surrender a walk to Russell Vaughan. After a groundout moved the runners to second and third, Tierney looped a single into left field to plate both runs and make it 10-2. That was as close as the Islanders would get, though, as Wesley Cox slammed the door to finish off the home squad.
The Islanders will return to conference play this weekend, as they travel to Houston for a three-game set against Houston Baptist.
