Baseball Starts Five-Game Road Swing with Trip to UTSA
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team (11-15) will look to even its season series with UTSA (16-8), as the teams will play each other for the second time this year with a midweek match up Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.
Earlier in the season, UTSA was able to carry its momentum from a three-run first inning to take an 8-3 victory over the Islanders at Whataburger Field as part of the Kleberg Bank College Classic.
After a strong performance in the first start of his career, going four innings with just two hits and two earned runs to help the Islanders to a doubleheaders sweep of UTPA, sophomore Dalton D'Spain (0-0, 3.00) will be called upon for his second-straight midweek start.
Prior to his last outing, D'Spain had made all eight of his appearances out of the bullpen, giving up just two earned runs in eight innings of work.
Matching up against him will be junior Boone Mokry. The 6-foot 6-inch righty has been strong in his last two outings, picking up starts in both. In those two nods, he has gone a combined 10 and 1/3 innings, while not allowing a single run off of 12 hits.
Despite not having any players hitting above .300, the Islanders have been a very disciplined bunch at the plate, as six different Islanders have coaxed double digit walks. A&M – Corpus Christi also boasts three players with on-base percentages over .400.
Leading the way in that category is Tyler Ware, as he has reached base at a .426 clip. The junior transfer leads the team with eight hit by pitches and is second with 13 walks to go along with his .294 batting average.
Ware also paces the team in slugging percentage at .424, as well as home runs (2), including a blast in the eighth inning last Saturday that ended a scoreless drought for the Islanders and tied the game against Southeastern in the bottom of the eighth.
Jordan Lee is just a couple of percentage points above Ware with his team-leading .298 average to go along with the most stolen bases, which sits at 14, tying his total from the first two season combined. This mark also ranks first in the Southland and ninth in the nation.
UTSA has had a strong season at the dish during the first half of the season, hitting at a collective average of .284. It features five players with averages over .300, while all eight Roadrunners who have started at least 20 games have tallied double-digit RBIs.
John Welborn leads the way at the plate for UTSA with his .337 batting average, while Mike Warren, Jesse Baker and RJ Perucki have each knocked in at least 21 runs so far this year.
This will not be the final time the former Southland Conference foes will take on one another though, as UTSA will make a return trip to the Coastal Bend in two weeks for a tilt on April 8, this time at Chapman Field.
The Islanders will continue their five-game stint away from Corpus Christi, as they travel to New Orleans this weekend for their first Southland series against the Privateers.
