CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team will travel up to the metroplex this weekend to take on a former Southland Conference rival with a four-game series against UT Arlington.
The Islanders (3-7) are looking to snap a three-game skid, dropping their final two games of the Kleberg Bank College Classic to UTSA and TCU before a tough loss on Tuesday at Texas State.
UTA (2-5) struggled to start the season, dropping three of their four games against Southland opponents. However, the Mavericks one win took 19 innings, in a 9-8 extra inning affair against McNeese State.
Their first two games against Big 12 foes didn't go so well, losing to both Oklahoma State and Baylor before bouncing back to throttle a common opponent to the Islanders with a 10-2 win over nationally ranked TCU.
Coming off his second strong start and first win of the season, Matt Danton will head to the mound to start game one of the series. He currently leads all starters with a 1.98 ERA, only giving up three runs on 10 hits in 13.2 innings pitched.
Danton will face off against Zach Thompson, who has given up the second-most runs on the team at 10. However, only half of those have been earned, as he boasts a 4.66 ERA with one loss and a no decision in his two starts. Thompson has had a wild side to him this season, accumulating team highs with eight walks and four wild pitches.
For game one of the doubleheader on Saturday, Preseason First-Team All-Conference pitcher Trevor Belicek (0-1, 4.50 ERA) will look for his first win of the season after having a tough task with starts against Texas and TCU to start the year.
Opposing him will be Jess Amedee, who has given up eight runs on 12 hits in 13 innings pitched.
Freshman Devin Skapura (1-1, 2.45 ERA), who has been strong in the first two outings of his collegiate career, will get the start in the second game of the doubleheader.
UTA has a TBA for game two, while the Islanders are waiting to name a starter for the series finale. In the Sunday game, the Mavericks are scheduled to start Brad Vachon, who comes off a win against TCU allowing just one run in 6.2 innings pitched.
Looking to get to Vachon and the other UTA pitchers this weekend will be Kyle Danford who currently leads the starters in average (.359), hits (14) and RBIs (11).
The Mavericks have gotten production from several different batters in their lineup with four different players tallying at least five RBIs.
In the all-time series UTA holds an 18-9 advantage with a majority of the matchups coming before the Mavericks' departure from the Southland. The last time the two sides met was in the 2012 Southland Conference Tournament where UTA knocked off the Islanders 10-5 to win all four games against A&M – Corpus Christi that season.
