Baseball Wins First Game, Drops Second of Doubleheader at UTPA
EDINBURG, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team came away with a split in the doubleheader against Texas-Pan American on Saturday in Edinburg, winning the first game 6-4 with a late rally before the Broncs' offense went off for an 11-1 win in seven innings in game two.
In the first game on the day, Kyle Danford paced the offense for the Islanders, driving in three runs on a 2-for-4 day from the plate. Two of those runs were in the form of Tyler Ware who reached base in all five of his plate appearances with a double, two singles and two hit by pitches.
Kevin Landgrebe notched his first win as an Islander, as he came in and threw three innings with one unearned run on one hit.
The Islanders got on the board early, as Danford singled to center to bring Cody Stephens and Ware around from second and third to put A&M – Corpus Christi up 2-0 in a hurry.
However, the Broncs stormed right back to score two runs on three hits in the bottom half of the inning to knot it all up at two.
The scoring slowed down over the next several innings, as the only run between the second and the fifth came in the bottom of the fourth for the Broncs after they put some pressure on the bases, resulting in a throwing error with the Islanders trying to gun a runner while stealing.
The Islanders came back to tie the game at three in the top of the sixth, as Ware pulled one to right field and came into second with a double before Danford knocked him in once again.
The lead changed hands again with UTPA taking it back following the seventh-inning stretch with a lone run to go up one.
That was when the Islanders took control of the game, as they came out to load the bases with no outs when Dominic Lopez singled to right field to put them back up by one. A&M – Corpus Christi added one more run before it was all said and done to give them a 6-4 lead, which they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the way.
In the second game, UTPA's Matt Harrell had a solid day on the mound, as he threw all seven innings, giving up just two hits and three strikeouts. However, he was a little wild, walking two hitters while also hitting three.
It was a different story for the Islanders' starter, as Tyler Schnuriger gave up seven runs on eight hits in three innings pitched to record the loss.
Five of those came in the first inning, with the big blow coming off a three-run triple by Alberto Morales.
The Broncs followed that up with a big fourth inning, plating three runs to jump out to a 9-0 advantage.
With runners on the corners, Danford came up with his fourth RBI of the day and first of the second game, as he grounded into a fielder's choice with runners on the corners to pull the Islanders within eight.
However, the A&M – Corpus Christi pitching unraveled in the bottom of the seventh, allowing two walks, two hit batters and a single, which resulted in two runs all without recording an out to give UTPA a 10-run lead, giving the Broncs a run-rule victory.
The Islanders will look for series split, with the finale of the four-game series set for noon on Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
