Four Islanders Placed on Southland Preseason All-Conference Teams

FULL SOUTHLAND POLLS RELEASE

FULL SOUTHLAND PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE RELEASE

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team placed four student-athletes on the Southland Conference Preseason All-Conference Baseball Teams, the league announced today.

The players to garner this acknowledgement were Cody Stephens and Trevor Belicek who earned first-team honors, while Jordan Lee and Jacob Dorris were placed on the second team.  Only preseason favorite Sam Houston State had more players recognized. In the preseason polls, the Islanders were picked fourth by the SIDs and fifth by the league coaches.

A year ago, left-handed pitcher Belicek was one of the most dominant players in the Southland, as he led the team with nine wins to only two losses and accumulated a 3.12 ERA. This also included victories in seven of his nine starts to go along with a 2.58 ERA in Southland play.

By far his best performance of the year came when he threw a complete game shutout, giving up on only one hit while striking out 10 for a 3-0 victory against Central Arkansas.

This has not been the first preseason recognition for the junior from Uvalde, Texas, as Collegiate Baseball Newspaper has tabbed him as the preseason pitcher of the year.

Joining him on the first team is senior second baseman Stephens who was also spectacular in the 2013 campaign. Stephens is the top returner in many offensive categories for the Islanders, including batting average (.313), RBIs (28), home runs (two), runs scored (48), hits (70), triples (two), total bases (84) and stolen bases (19). He also had 20 multi-hit games a year ago.

Playing in 57 games a year ago, while only failing to reach base safely in 10 of those, is outfielder Lee, who picked up second-team honors. He was also second on the team in walks (20), steals (9) and on-base percentage (.381) to go along with a .307 batting average to go along with 23 RBIs.

Rounding out the preseason selections is junior Jacob Dorris who was dominant out of the bullpen in 2013. The Weatherford, Texas, native tied a school record with 13 saves and led the team with a 2.36 ERA. He struck out 33 batters and allowed only seven runs in 26.2 innings pitched. Even more staggering was the fact that Dorris did not allow a run in his final 12 appearances.

Also released today were the coaches’ and sports information directors’ polls, as after the Islanders recorded their best finish in school history, coming in second in the conference a year ago, they have been picked to finish fifth in the coaches’ poll and fourth in the SID poll.

In the coaches poll A&M – Corpus Christi tallied 91 votes, while a first-place vote in the SID poll gave the Islanders 94 points and helped them to a slightly higher predicted finish.

In both polls defending Southland champ Sam Houston State was projected to win the title yet again. Southeastern Louisiana was picked in a tie for second with Lamar in the coaches poll and held the second slot all to itself in the SID poll.
