CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team competed in the first game of the Fall World Series, with the Blue Team coming out on top 7-2 on Friday. Dalton D'Spain was the winning pitcher, while the Grey Team's Matt Danton took the loss.
Sophomore D'Spain had a splendid performance on the mound, baffling some familiar faces. He went six innings without allowing a run to score and only three hits. He also sat down three batters via strikeout.
The Blue Team's offense backed up its pitcher, scoring runs in three consecutive innings. The team picked up two in the second and third innings and one in the fourth to open up a big lead.
Two newcomers performed well offensively for the Blue Team. Blinn transfer Josh Garza picked up one RBI on a 2-for-4 performance, while freshman Dawson Yates joined the two hit parade, making both of those hits count by coming all the way around to score on each occasion.
It was the junior Danton who allowed five of the Blue Team's seven runs on the day. He also gave up nine hits and one walk in his five-inning performance.
A major part of the Grey Team's two runs were redshirt freshmen Zacarias Hardy and Dylan Shofner. Hardy drove in one of the team's tallies, while Shofner came across to score one of them, going 2-for-4 on the day.
The Grey Team will look to even up the series Saturday, but it will have to do it off a tough pitcher. Returning ace Trevor Belicek is scheduled to take the bump tomorrow for the Blue Team, while Tyler Schnuriger will get the nod for the opposing squad.
First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Chapman Field. Admission to the game is free for those who would like to attend.
