Top Performance #1: Trevor Belicek Flirts With Perfection

After struggling to develop as a two-way player during his freshman season, Trevor Belicek flourished as a sophomore by focusing solely on his pitching. He finished with a 9-2 record — placing him one win shy of the school record — and a 3.12 ERA.

However, one outing stood out among all the others, as on April 20, Belicek put on a show in front of his home crowd by tossing a near no-hitter against Central Arkansas, throwing a complete-game, one-hit shutout. For good measure, the lefty struck out a career-high 10 batters along the way.

The Uvalde, Texas, native had it going early on setting down four out of the first seven batters via strikeouts. It was not until the top of the third, when a pitch hit the eighth-hole hitter, that Central Arkansas registered its first base runner of the game. There were not many other Bears on the basepaths though, as Belicek compiled five 1-2-3 innings, allowing just five total base runners the entire game.

Heading into the ninth, the visitor's hit column still had a zero in it, but the leadoff man would break up perfection with a single up the middle. The southpaw would not be denied the complete-game shutout though, as he retired three out of the next four hitters to secure the 3-0 victory for the Islanders.

It was a common occurrence for Belicek to dominate Southland Conference opponents, as he picked up seven wins without a loss to go along with a 2.58 ERA in conference play. He was also named a semifinalist for the Gregg Olson award, which was created to recognize the "Breakout Player of the Year."
