TOP PERFORMANCE #5: TREVOR FOSS MOWS DOWN TEXAS-PAN AMERICAN
Senior Trevor Foss had always been a guy with a ton of potential for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team, but it had only converted to glimpses of brilliance in his first three years on the Island. Heading into the 2013 season, more was expected of the Janesville, Wis., native than ever before.
The righty set the tone right out of the gate, opening his season with one of the finest performances on the mound in school history. Against Texas-Pan American, Foss delivered a complete-game, three-hit shutout in which he struck out 15 Broncs on Feb. 16.
The senior posted 1-2-3 innings in the first, second, fifth and sixth, and the only two hits he surrendered in his first seven innings came in the third. He matched his career high with his 11th strikeout in the top of the seventh, and continued to cruise all the way to the final out for his first career shutout. He went on to earn National Player of the Week recognition from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and his first of two Southland Pitcher of the Week honors.
Foss went 8-6 on the season with three complete games and a 3.09 ERA. He struck out more than a batter per inning on the campaign, notching 103 Ks in his 102 innings of work. Opponents hit just .206 against him on the year, and he earned Third Team All-Southland honors.
With his career wrapped up, Foss accomplished another dream on June 8, as he was selected on Day Three of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The Los Angeles Angels nabbed him in the 22nd round (667th overall) as he was the third-highest draft pick in Islanders history. He is currently in the Angels' minor-league system.
