The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Baseball team will play its final regular season series of the year starting Thursday, with the team traveling to Nacogdoches, Texas to take on Stephen F. Austin on the road. Game one is set for 3 p.m. on Thursday, while Friday's first pitch is at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday wraps up with a 1 p.m. start.
The Islanders (30-21, 15-9 Southland) are currently in second place of the Southland Conference standings, but the race is so close that the team could end up anywhere from first to seventh in the tournament seeding. The team has a shot at the Southland Conference Championship, but it will take a near perfect weekend for it to happen.
The Islanders need to win at least two-of-three from SFA while Central Arkansas sweeps Sam Houston State. An Islanders sweep and SHSU losing two-of-three would also put the Islanders into a tie for first place. The only way for the team to get the #1 seed in the tournament would with a sweep of SFA and a UCA sweep of SHSU, but the possibility is there.
For any of these things to come to fruition, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi must take care of business on its end, with a tough Lumberjack team awaiting them in Nacogdoches. SFA is 27-25 overall, and just one game back of the Islanders in the standings at 14-10.
Hunter Dozier, the prohibitive favorite for the Southland Conference Player of the Year award, leads SFA offensively. He has a conference-best in batting average (.398), home runs (16) and doubles (23), while ranking second with 47 RBI. Ricardo Sanchez is second on the team with a .377 batting average as the two players above .300 on the team.
Offensively for the Islanders, Eric Weiss leads the way with a .344 batting average this season. Jonathan Gonzales (.330), Brad Porras (.320), Cody Stephens (.318), Jordan Lee and Zach Taylor (.309) follows behind Weiss in average on the team. Gonzales has a team-high 43 RBI, while Weiss follows close behind at 41 on the season.
The starting rotation for the Islanders will consist of Trevor Foss (7-6, 3.24 ERA), Trevor Belicek (8-1, 3.04 ERA) and Matt Danton (5-2, 4.76 ERA) during the three-game set. They will face Chase Greening (4-4, 2-55 ERA), Kyle Cross (5-5, 3.86 ERA) and Justin Choate (4-2, 4.40 ERA), respectively.
