FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Baseball's Eric Weiss capped off the final home series of his Islanders career in big-time fashion, and he was recognized for his efforts on Monday as he was named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week following the Islanders series win over Lamar.
He was the Hitter of the Week, while Sam Houston State pitcher Caleb Smith was named the league's Pitcher of the Week.
Weiss hit .533 over the three-game series, including an RBI single that tied the series finale at 15-15 as the Islanders had to rally for the victory. In all, Weiss produced five RBI while scoring six runs to lead the way.
Weiss had a hit and an RBI in the Islanders 9-7 win on Friday, and he followed with three hits, including a home run, in the Saturday game. He saved the best for last however, recording the first four-hit game of his Islanders career on Senior Day as the team won a thrilling 17-15 victory. Weiss had three singles and a double on Sunday while recording the game-tying RBI in the 8th at 15-15 as the Islanders rallied for the clinching win of the series.
Weiss leads the Islanders in hitting, with the senior raising his batting average to .344 with his torrid weekend against Lamar. He has helped the team to second place in the Southland Conference with just one series to go. It is the latest the Islanders have ever been in contention for the league title as the team trails Sam Houston State by two games.
The Islanders face Stephen F. Austin on the road to close out the 2013 regular season. The teams will face off in a Thursday – Saturday series to accommodate the early start to the Southland Conference Tournament next week in Sugar Land, Texas.
