Jacob Dorris Named to NCBWA Mid-Season Stopper of the Year Watch List
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (NCBWA) – Texas A&M – Corpus Christi closer Jacob Dorris has been named to the Mid-Season Stopper of the Year Watch List, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Dorris, a sophomore from Weatherford, has been a key component to the Islanders ascension to the top of the Southland Conference standings, with the reliever earning a Southland Conference-best eight saves so far in 2013. His eight saves have already matched the single-season record for an Islanders pitcher in program history.
With the team in second place of the Southland Conference standings, Dorris will likely be tasked with continuing his dominant ways on the mound in league play. He has 24 strikeouts against just six walks in 17.1 innings to go along with a 3.63 ERA and a 1-1 record. He has a team-high 18 appearances, and has allowed just seven runs during the year.
Dorris is one of 51 players in the nation to be named to the list, and is one of just two in the Southland Conference along with Southeastern Louisiana's Dylan Hills. The two teams will continue their fight to get to the top of the Southland Conference standings this weekend when they square off in Hammond, La. on the Lions' campus.
Nominations for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award were made by baseball sports information/media relations contacts. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released Wednesday, June 5, prior to start of NCAA Super Regional tournament competition.
The NCBWA's All-America Committee will select the winner, with this year's recipient to be announced during the 2013 College World Series.
