FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M – Corpus Christi pitcher Trevor Belicek has been named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced on Monday. It is the second time an Islanders pitcher has been named Pitcher of the Week, with Trevor Foss winning it after the opening weekend.
Belicek, a sophomore from Uvalde, Texas, pitched a one-hit, complete-game shutout against Central Arkansas on Saturday, carrying a no-hitter into the top of the ninth where he gave up a leadoff single before getting the final three outs to finish the shutout.
Belicek sat down the first seven hitters in a row before hitting the next batter. He allowed a walk each in the fourth and fifth innings, and then got 10 straight outs before giving up the long single in the ninth.
He struck out four of the first seven batters on his way to a 10-strikeout performance, the most in his Islanders career. He improved to 6-1 on the season with the win on Saturday.
Belicek and the Islanders will face Houston – Victoria on Tuesday afternoon at Chapman Field before traveling to Hammond, La. to face Southeastern Louisiana in an important Southland Conference series for both teams.
