CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Baseball team lost a tough 7-2 contest on Friday night against Central Arkansas. The team had its chances, but they were unable to capitalize and get into the Bears bullpen until the final inning of the game.
The Islanders (21-16, 8-5 Southland) started out slowly as UCA (27-9, 7-6 Southland) got eight strong innings from their starting pitcher to give the Bears the edge. Trevor Foss (5-5) took the loss as he went 6.0 innings and gave up five runs, three of them earned, on eight hits. He walked one UCA batter and struck out eight on the night. Caleb McClanahan got the win for the Bears, pitching 8.0 innings while giving up two runs on eight hits with no walks and eight batters down on strikes.
The Bears struck first in the opening inning, plating two unearned runs for an early 2-0 lead. They added to it in the top of the third with one run on two hits to make it 3-0.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi responded with a run of their own, with Russell Vaughan singling up the middle, moving to second on a Brandon Tierney hit-by-pitch and going to third on a balk by the UCA pitcher. A Stafford Brantley sacrifice fly cut the deficit to 3-1, but the team was unable to get any more.
UCA added another run in the top of the fifth, but once again, the Islanders answered. Tierney started the inning off by reaching on a second hit-by-pitch of the game, moved to second on a Brantley single and the bases were loaded with no outs when Taylor picked up an infield hit. The team was only able to manage one run however, with a sacrifice fly by Eric Weiss scoring Tierney to make it 4-2.
It would be all the Islanders would add though, as UCA picked up one in the sixth and two in the seventh to finish the scoring at 7-2 in favor of the Bears.
The Islanders will look to rebound from defeat on Saturday in a 4 p.m. contest at Chapman Field. Trevor Belicek will be on the mound for the Islanders, while Jeffrey Enloe will get the nod for Central Arkansas.
