Islanders Offense Baffled By Sam Houston State Pitching in Series Opener

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Baseball team was unable to solve the pitching of Sam Houston State starting pitcher Cody Dickson on Friday night, with the Bearkats junior throwing a complete-game shutout as SHSU took a 5-0 win to open Southland Conference play. The teams will play the second game of the series at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Don Sanders Stadium.

The Islanders (12-10, 0-1 Southland) were able to muster just one hit against the Bearkats (11-10, 1-0 Southland) in the Friday night opener between the teams. Trevor Foss (3-3) was tagged with the hard-luck loss, as the starter allowed four runs, three of them earned, on seven hits over 6.0 innings of work.

The Bearkats got all the scoring they would need in the bottom of the first, picking up one run on three hits as an RBI double by Hayden Simerly scored Anthony Azar for the 1-0 lead.

SHSU had one hit in the bottom of the second, but Foss did not allow another hit until the bottom half of the sixth in an inning that should have been over before the scoring started. After getting the first out, Foss struck out the next batter, but a wild pitch allowed him to reach base. After striking out the next batter in what would have been the final out of the inning, the Bearkats reeled off three straight hits for three runs and a 4-0 advantage.

Sam Houston added a run in the bottom of the seventh, and the Islanders were unable to get any on the board.

Cody Stephens had the only hit of the game for the Islanders, putting a single up the middle with two outs in the sixth inning. He was one of only two base runners for the team, with Brandon Tierney reaching base on a hit-by-pitch in the third inning.

Eric Weiss saw his 16-game hitting streak ended, going 0-for-3 on the night to snap the run that started in the sixth game of the season. It was just his second time this year that has happened, as the senior has registered at least one hit in 20-of-22 games in 2013.

The two will meet again on Saturday as the Islanders look to bounce back from the Friday night loss. First pitch is set for 4 p.m., with Trevor Belicek on the mound for the Islanders and Andrew Godail starting for the Bearkats.
