The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Baseball team will start another road trip this Thursday, taking on Houston – Victoria at 5:30 in Riverside Stadium before beginning a three-game series against Sam Houston State on Friday night in the first Southland Conference series of the season. The four games will mark 10-of-11 games on the road for the team after starting the year with first 13 in Corpus Christi.
The Islanders (11-9) have faced UHV (9-16) five times in the last three years, winning all five, but having several close calls in the series. The Islanders won twice last season, winning by one run (3-2) in the first game, and picking up a two-run margin of victory (10-8) in the second game.
The offense for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi has been getting big contributions from several individuals, with Eric Weiss picking up five RBI, including the eventual game-winning grand slam, against Harvard this past Monday. Jonathan Gonzales had a 6-for-6 night with eight RBI in the series-opening win over Texas State last weekend.
Weiss is leading the team with a .351 average on the year, and he is second on the team with 17 RBI. Gonzales leads the team with 19 RBI this season, and is third in batting average at .338 through 20 games. Zach Taylor is second on the team at .345, while Jordan Lee is hitting .318 and Kyle Danford sits at .317 to round out the Islanders above the .300 this season.
Tyler Schnuriger will get the start for the Islanders. He is 0-2 with a 9.53 ERA on the year, taking losses against Texas – Pan American and UTSA during the 2013 campaign. He will look to bounce back in a starters role after coming out of the bullpen the past three appearances. His best outing of the year came against Dallas Baptist, with the sophomore coming on in relief and pitching 4.1 innings while giving up just one runs on six hits as he struck out four batters.
UHV is coming into the contest one a four-game winning streak, sweeping a series over Fisher College last weekend.
They are led in hitting by Joshua Boothe and Chad Kruse, who both sport a .347 batting average, while Brandon Bohanon follows closely with a .333 average and Dylan Blaha is at .326 on the season. The Jaguars have not yet named a starter for the game.
