Baseball Comes Up Short in Series Finale Against Houston

HOUSTON – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Baseball team was unable to come up with timely hitting on Sunday afternoon, leaving 10 runners on base while falling by a 3-1 final against Houston in the rubber match of the series. The Cougars took the series with wins on Friday and Sunday of the three-game set.

The Islanders (9-7) got a good start from Adam Hoelscher (1-1) in the loss, with the senior giving up just six hits in 7.0 innings, but the Cougars (12-4) were able to string four together in the bottom of the third for the eventual winning runs. In all, Hoelscher gave up three runs while striking out two and walking one.

The Islanders were unable to take advantage of early opportunities, leaving a pair of runners stranded in the top of the first and second innings, before finally breaking through in the top of the third.

Cody Stephens started things off with a single to center, stole second base and then came home to score on an Eric Weiss RBI single through the left side to make it 1-0.

The lead would by short lived however, as four consecutive hits with one out in the bottom of the third answered the Islanders run, giving UH a 2-1 lead early on.

The Islanders threatened several times throughout the contest, but the inability to bring home runners in scoring position doomed the offense on the day.

A solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth extended the Cougars lead to 3-1 in the late stages of the game.

Texas A&M – Corpus Christi was unable to get any momentum going as Houston closed out the game.

Weiss and Zach Taylor led the team with two hits each, while Weiss had the only RBI for the Islanders. Jordan Lee, Stephens, Brad Lamberti and Kyle Danford added one hit apiece.

Next up for the team will be weekend series in San Marcos against former Southland foe Texas State. The Islanders earned a 7-3 win during a midweek contest on February 26 at Chapman Field in the first meeting between the teams this season.
