HOUSTON – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Baseball team saw its winning streak snapped at five games on Friday night, falling 13-0 against Houston in the opener of a three-game set at Cougar Field. Game two is set for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch on Saturday evening.
The Islanders (8-6) played evenly early, but big innings in the fourth, sixth and eighth did in the team in its first road test of the season. Houston (11-3) won its third straight, and eighth out of the last nine games. Trevor Foss (2-2) was tagged with the loss after going 5.0 innings and giving up four runs, three of them earned, on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
The Islanders played the Cougars to a draw until the fourth inning, but the offense was only able to produce six hits against the two Houston pitchers.
The Cougars got a big inning in the bottom of the fourth against Foss, scoring their first run on a wild pitch before a two-run home run by Jacob Campbell made it a 3-0 game.
Houston added an unearned run against Foss in the fifth, the last inning the Islanders starter would pitch.
The Cougars added four runs in the sixth to make it 8-0, and five more in the bottom of the eighth made it the final score of 13-0.
Trevor Belicek will get the first weekend start of his collegiate career on Saturday, getting the ball for the Islanders while Austin Pruitt will be on the mound for the Cougars.
