Key Hitting Backs Brilliant Pitching Performance in Win Over DBU
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Baseball team earned a big 5-1 win over Dallas Baptist on Friday night, using another stellar performance from Trevor Foss on the way to the victory.
The Islanders (5-5) got 7.0 innings from Foss (2-1) as he allowed just four hits and struck out eight batters while walking four and giving up no runs against DBU (4-5). Franco Pace earned the first save of his career, coming in with one out in the eighth inning and striking out all five batters he faced, getting three of them looking, to finish it out for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.
Jordan Lee, Brad Porras and Eric Weiss each picked up a pair of hits in the game, while Brad Lamberti, Stafford Brantley and Zach Taylor had one hit apiece. Porras and Lamberti drove in two runs each, while Jonathan Gonzales had one RBI in the game.
The Islanders got on the board early with two runs in the bottom of the first, getting all they needed with a 2-0 lead. Lee led off the inning with an infield single, moved to all the way to third when Cody Stephens reached on an error by the DBU shortstop and Stephens moved to second on a stolen base to put two runners in scoring position. Lee scored on an RBI groundout by Gonzales, and Porras followed with a single to right field that scored Stephens to make it 2-0.
They added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Gonzales drew a walk to start the inning and moved to third on a Weiss double. Lamberti came through with a big hit through the right side that plated both runners to make it a 4-0 advantage.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh as Lee singled to the pitcher, moved to second on a Stephens sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a ground out and came home to score on another Porras single to right field for the 5-0 advantage.
The Patriots got on the board in the top of the eighth as O'Shea Dumes came on in relief of Foss, but surrendered a leadoff triple to Boomer Collins that got him into early trouble. After getting a strikeout swinging for the first out, a single to right scored Collins to make it 5-1. That is when Pace came on to get a strikeout swinging for out number two, and got the final batter of the inning on a strikeout looking to end the inning.
Pace finished off the game with a pair of strikeouts looking to start the ninth, and a strikeout swinging to close it out.
The two teams will meet once again on Saturday, with a 1 p.m. first pitch featuring Tyler Schnuriger of the Islanders facing off against Cy Sneed of Dallas Baptist on the mound.
