Late Hawkeyes Rally Closes Out Islanders Baseball in Kleberg Bank College Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Baseball team tied it late, but had an even later Iowa rally as the Hawkeyes earned a 4-2 win in the final game of the Kleberg Bank College Classic. The Islanders tied things up in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Iowa responded with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth to pick up the win.

The Islanders (3-5) got out to an early lead, but Iowa (3-3) would rally early and stave off a late charge to finish 2-1 in the tournament. Adam Hoelscher started for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi and went 5.1 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits and one walk with no strikeouts. Jacob Dorris would come on in relief and be tagged with the loss, going 2.0 innings as he ran into trouble in the eighth, giving up two runs on two walks while allowing no hits and striking out one.

The home team struck first in the opening frame as Cody Stephens reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a single by Jonathan Gonzales and reached third as Brad Porras drew a walk to load the bases. Stephens came in to score on a fielder's choice by Eric Weiss to make it a 1-0 Islanders lead.

The Hawkeyes would respond quickly, plating a run in the top of the second as Nick Day doubled down the left field line to bring home designated hitter Keith Brand to tie it at 1-1.

Iowa picked up another run in the fifth, scoring on an error that would have ended the inning, to make it 2-1.

The Islanders responded in the sixth as Brad Lamberti walked, moved all the way to third on an error by the pitcher and came home with a Zach Taylor RBI on a fielder's choice.

The score held until the top of the eighth as Iowa scored a pair of runs on just one hit as a walk and a fielder's choice on a sacrifice bunt that did not record an out started the inning. After another sacrifice moved the runners to second an third, a walk loaded the bases with just one out. Brand came through in a big spot for the Hawkeyes, doubling down the right field line to score a pair of runs and make it 4-2.

Texas A&M – Corpus Christi was unable to score again as they could not get a rally going in the final two innings.

Next up for the Islanders will be a midweek contest on Tuesday against Texas State at Chapman Field. First pitch for the game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
