Islanders Baseball Opens 2013 Schedule Against UTPA This Friday Under The Lights

The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Baseball team will open up the 2013 regular season on Friday night with a 6:30 p.m. game against Texas – Pan American to start a four-game series against the Broncs at Chapman Field.

It will be the first of 13 consecutive home games to start the year for the Islanders, with five of those coming against competition that reached the NCAA Tournament a season ago. The team finished 24-33 a year ago and made it to their second straight Southland Conference Tournament, a first in Islanders history.

The Broncs are coming off of a 30-22 record, the first winning season under coach Manny Mantrana since coming to UTPA in 2009. The team returns 19 players, 10 position players and nine pitchers.

Starting on the mound for the Islanders will be sophomore Tyler Schnuriger. During his freshman season, Schnuriger pitched strictly in a relief role while recording 11.0 innings in eight appearances. The righty struck out 12 batters and allowed five walks as he pitched in key situations out of the bullpen.

Returning for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi will be 15 lettermen, five of who saw the majority of action in the playing field. Preseason All-Southland designated hitter Jonathan Gonzales will lead the way, with Eric Weiss, Brad Porras, Jordan Lee, Stafford Brantley and Kyle Danford also returning.

Anchoring the rotation for the Islanders will be Trevor Foss and Adam Hoelscher, two seniors who have spent their entire careers at The Island University. In addition to Schnuriger, Jacob Dorris, Trevor Belicek, Tim Keller, Franco Pace, Tim Beard and Matt Danton also return from the 2012 pitching staff.

New faces include catchers Brad Lamberti and Russell Vaughan, along with infielders Zach Taylor, Brandon Tierney, Cody Stephens, Dominic Lopez and Brandon Guilford, while outfielders Jacob Hubert, Zach Hardy and Clayton Davis are new to the team.

The pitching staff adds eight newcomers as AJ Longoria, O'Shea Dumes, Kaleb Keith, Thomas Casey, Nolan Holland, Seth Horton, Chris Cano and Dalton D'Spain will be in their first season as an Islander.
