CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team lost its opener on Friday night, falling 7-3 to the McNeese State Cowboys in the first game of the Southland Conference series at Chapman Field.
The Islanders are 19-27 on the season with a 10-15 mark in the league. The Cowboys move to 19-24 overall, 13-12 in conference games. Adam Hoelscher was tagged with the loss, pitching 4.2 innings to fall to 6-5 on the season. Hoelscher gave up just three hits, but walked one and hit two batters while giving up five runs, two earned, in the loss.
In a game that Texas A&M – Corpus Christi led by a slim margin early on, a five-run inning did the Islanders in for the second Southland game in a row.
The Islanders threatened in the second inning, getting three straight hits, but having the final out of the inning thrown out at the plate on an outfield assist to keep the score 0-0.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi did score in the third inning, picking up one run on two hits to make it a 1-0 game. Omar Garcia led off with a single up the middle, and moved to second on a groundout by Jordan Lee. Drew Vest followed with an RBI single through the right side to score Garcia for a 1-0 lead.
McNeese struck back in a big way during the top of the fifth inning, getting five runs on just two hits, but taking advantage of three Islanders errors as well as a walk and two hit-by-pitches to take a 5-1 lead.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi got a pair of runs back in the bottom half of the inning to cut it to a 5-3 score. Jeramie Marek started the inning with a single to third, and Santiago Ruiz followed by reaching on an error. Lee brought home Marek on a single up the middle to cut the lead to 5-2. After a failed hit-and-run moved Lee to second while Ruiz was out on the play, back-to-back singles by Vest and Jonathan Gonzales plated Lee for a 5-3 score.
It would be all the runs they would get however, as the Cowboys added single runs in the seventh and eighth to make it a 7-3 final in the first game of the series.
Lee led the team with three hits on the night, while Vest, Eric Weiss, Marek and Garcia each had two hits in the game. Gonzales, Weston Montgomery and Ruiz had one hit apiece to round out the offensive output. Lee, Vest and Gonzales each also had one RBI on the night.
Game two is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start on Saturday afternoon at Chapman Field. Daniel Minor will get the start for the Islanders, while McNeese State is schedule to pitch Tyler McDonald in the second game of the weekend.
