Texas A&M – Corpus Christi junior Jonathan Gonzales powered his way to the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week honor, the conference announced on Monday after a vote by league sports information directors.
Gonzales, the Islanders designated hitter in all four games last week, hit for an even .500 average while bashing his way to a 1.056 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage. He hit three home runs and a double on his way to a 10-RBI performance in the four games during the week.
He started things off on Thursday in a non-conference game against Houston – Victoria, crushing two home runs and driving in six runs on a perfect 4-for-4 night.
His only game of the week without a hit came on Friday against No. 27 Sam Houston State, but he still managed to drive in a run on a sacrifice fly.
Saturday he had a three-hit game with two RBI as he hit his third homer of the week, a two-run shot against the Bearkats starter in the first inning to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead. Sunday rounded out the weekend with a two-hit day and an RBI on a fielder's choice to score the first run of the game.
In addition to his RBI and batting average numbers, Gonzales also had one double, one walk and scored five runs during the four-game stretch. He recorded at least one RBI in each of the week.
Lamar pitcher Eric Harrington was named the league's Pitcher of the Week following his complete-game shutout of the McNeese State Cowboys this past weekend.
Next up for Gonzales and the Islanders will be a Tuesday night game against Texas – Pan American in the final midweek game of the year. The Broncs travel to Chapman Field for a 6 p.m. first pitch against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.
