Islanders Come Up Short in Both Ends of Doubleheader

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team suffered a pair of close Southland Conference losses on Saturday, with the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks taking a 4-2 win in game one of a doubleheader, before earning a 2-1 final in the nightcap.

The Islanders fall to 15-24 on the year, 8-12 in Southland Conference play. SFA improves to 16-23 overall, 9-11 in league games. Trevor Foss was tagged with the loss in game one to move to 0-6 on the year, while Adam Hoelscher pitched 8.2 innings and gave up two runs, just one of them earned, but still saw his record go to 6-4 on the season with the loss in game two.

In both games, the Islanders had their chances, but were unable to get timely hits, including in the final inning of both games with the tying or winning runs in scoring position.

In the first game of the day, the Islanders fell behind by a 3-0 score after scoring single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings.

The Islanders pulled within one after the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs on four hits to make it a 3-2 score. Jonathan Gonzales started things off with a leadoff single, but was out on the bases as Eric Weiss reached on a fielder's choice. Jeramie Marek followed with a single to move Weiss into scoring position at second base. Santiago Ruiz came through with an RBI single to left field, and was followed by an RBI single by Brad Porras to make it 3-2.

SFA added a single run in the top of the ninth, and the Islanders were unable to get anything in the bottom half to make it a 4-2 final in the front end of the doubleheader.

Game two saw the Lumberjacks score an unearned run in the top of the first inning after an Islander error allowed a batter to reach, and he would eventually come around to score on a double for a 1-0 lead.

The visitors added to the lead in the third inning, getting a single run on the first hit of the series for Hunter Dozier, an RBI double down the third base line to score a runner all the way from first to make it 2-0 SFA.

The Islanders manufactured a run in the bottom of the sixth, as Jordan Lee and Drew Vest drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Gonzales hit into a fielder's choice, with Vest being put out at second, but the SFA shortstop overthrew first base and allowed Lee to come all the way around to score an unearned run to make it 2-1.

Texas A&M – Corpus Christi threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning, getting a runner all the way to third, but were unable to bring the tying run home.

In the ninth inning, Marek singled and stole second base ahead of an Eric Weiss walk. After Santiago Ruiz reached on an error by the second baseman to load the bases, but a strikeout ended the game with the bases full for a 2-1 Lumberjacks win.

The two teams will play the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon, with a scheduled 1 p.m. first pitch. Daniel Minor will be on the mound as he tries to stop the bleeding for the Islanders, while Colton Eubanks gets the start for SFA.
