Islanders Drop Game to Hot-Hitting #23 Longhorns in Austin
AUSTIN – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team ran into a hot-hitting #23 Texas Longhorns team coming off of their highest scoring game of the season as the Islanders lost a 9-2 final at Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night. Including the game Tuesday, the Longhorns were hitting nearly .400 as a team over the last two games, and .327 the previous 15 games coming into the night.
The Islanders move to 13-19 overall, while Texas improves to 18-12 on the year. Jake Dziubczynski got the start and was tagged with the loss, pitching 2.2 innings while giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks to fall to 0-3 on the year.
Texas third baseman Erich Weiss, the second cousin of Islanders outfielder Eric Weiss, led the charge for the Longhorns offense with a 3-for-4 night and three RBI. The UT infielder is hitting .464 over his last 16 games.
Islanders relief pitchers Franco Pace, Trevor Belicek and Phillip Garcia did a good job holding the Longhorns in check, combining for 3.1 innings and seven strikeouts between the final out of the fourth inning to the end of the seventh inning.
The Longhorns used a leadoff single, a sacrifice bunt, and then another single to score the first run of the game in the opening inning. They threatened to get more after loading the bases, but Dziubczynski induced an inning-ending double play to get out of trouble. Texas added two more runs in the third inning following a leadoff double and a three singles to make it 3-0.
The Islanders got on the board in the fourth inning, led off by an infield single by Eric Weiss. After a Jonathan Gonzales groundout moved Weiss to second, Jordan Lee followed with an infield single to put runners on first and second with one out. A third infield single, this time by Jeramie Marek, brought Weiss home to make it a 3-1 score.
Texas responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 6-1 game.
After a tough inning in the fourth, the Islanders worked quickly in the fifth as Franco Pace struck out the side for the first 1-2-3 inning of the game against Texas. It was part of seven strikeouts in three innings for the Islanders from the fifth through seventh innings.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi added a single run in the eighth to make it a 6-2 game. Drew Vest led off the inning by reaching on an error, and moved to second on a pinch-hit single by Stafford Brantley. Gonzales followed with an RBI single past the third baseman to score Vest and make it 6-2.
The Longhorns added three runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Next up for the Islanders will be a three-game Southland Conference series in Natchitoches, La. against Northwestern State. The teams will play at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
