Islanders Unable to Get Offense Going, Fall 2-0 Against Texas State

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team could not get the big hit on Friday night as they fell by a 2-0 final against Texas State in the middle game of the three-game series. The finale is scheduled for Saturday, with the "Strikeout Breast Cancer" game scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at Chapman Field.

The Islanders fall to 12-18 overall, with a 5-9 mark in Southland Conference games. The Bobcats moved to 20-10 overall, 8-6 in league play. Starter Adam Hoelscher was the hard-luck loser, pitching 6.2 innings and giving up just one run on eight hits, with three walks and eight strikeouts. He falls to 5-3 on the season despite giving up just the lone run.

Texas State picked up a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and a bases loaded walk in the eighth to score their two runs in the game.

Texas A&M – Corpus Christi threatened in both the first and sixth innings, getting a runner in scoring position both times, but were unable to bring them home. The biggest chance for the Islanders came in the sixth, with Weston Montgomery at second base and Kyle Danford at the plate.

Danford drilled one to the right side, but a spectacular diving play by the Bobcats first baseman kept the ball on the infield. The fielder recovered and threw to get the out at first while holding Montgomery to just one base instead of bringing him around to score.

After the threat, the Islanders were able to get just two runners on base in the final three innings.

Daniel Minor will try to stop the bleeding on Sunday, just as he did a week ago at Nicholls State in the series finale. He will be facing Kyle Finnegan on the mound for Texas State.

The game starts at 2 p.m., and there will be an Easter Egg hunt following the game. The Islanders will also be wearing pink hats and socks in recognition of the "Strikeout Breast Cancer" game in honor of breast cancer survivors.
