Baseball Back Home to Host Texas State in Southland Series

Game Notes

The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team will play at Chapman Field this Thursday against Texas State for the start of a three-game Southland Conference home series. On Saturday, the baseball team will be wearing special pink hats and socks for the 'Strikeout Breast Cancer' game.

The Islanders come into the series with a 12-16 record on the year, and are 5-7 in Southland Conference games. The Bobcats are 18-10 overall, with an even 6-6 mark in league contests. The teams are playing an unusual Thursday, Friday, Saturday in observance of Easter on Sunday. The series will be the first games at home since March 18, when the Islanders hosted Southeastern Louisiana.

The Islanders are coming off of a 1-2 weekend at Nicholls, where Daniel Minor put on another dominant performance for the Islanders, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out 10 batters and walking none in a complete game. For his effort, Minor was named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season.

He will get the start on Saturday, while Tim Keller is back in the rotation with the Thursday evening start, while Adam Hoelscher will be on the mound against the Bobcats at 6 p.m. on Friday.

Offensively, Jonathan Gonzales leads the way with five home runs on the year, and is second the team with a .279 batting average and 12 RBI. Jordan Lee leads the team with a .289 average, while Eric Weiss leads the team in RBI with 14.

Texas State comes into the series with the top pitching staff in the conference, led by starters Travis Ballew, Colton Turner and Kyle Finnegan. The team sports a 2.65 ERA, and has a conference-high 234 strikeouts.

Offensively, Jeff McVaney leads the team with a .339 batting average, as well as a team-high 23 RBI. Casey Kalenkosky has hit a high of seven home runs for the Bobcats, and is second on the team with 20 runs batted in this season.
