THIBODAUX, La. – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi batting lineup was unable to figure out Nicholls starter Seth Webster, registering just five hits against the reigning Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week as the Islanders fell by a 7-1 final against Nicholls on Friday night.
The loss brings the Islanders to 11-15 on the season, and 4-6 in league play. The Colonels improve to 15-11 on the year, 5-5 in conference games.
Matt Danton fell to 1-1 on the season after taking the loss in his first weekend start of the year. The freshman last just 3.1 innings while giving up four runs, three of them earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out three batters. Jake Dziubczynski, Bryce Zak and Alex Jack all pitching in relief for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.
Webster followed up his complete-game shutout against McNeese State last Friday with another strong performance, giving up just one run on five hits, while walking none and striking out nine batters.
Jonathan Gonzales provided the only scoring for the Islanders, taking an 0-1 pitch down the left field line for his fourth home run of the season. Jeramie Marek, Eric Weiss, Jordan Lee and Santiago Ruiz each had one hit for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.
The Colonels picked up a single run in the third, but it was the fourth inning that hurt the Islanders. After already plating on run in the inning, an error on a dropped fly ball allowed another to score and a ground out to third brought in the final run to make it a 4-0 lead.
The Islanders got on the board in the top of the fifth with a leadoff solo home run by Jonathan Gonzales to make it a 4-1 score.
Nicholls added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 7-1 over Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.
The two teams are schedule for two more games, with a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday up next, followed by the finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
