CONWAY, Ark. – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team could not match the Central Arkansas Bears on Sunday, falling 5-3 in the series finale to finish the weekend 1-2 against UCA.
The Islanders now sit at 11-14 overall, and are now 4-5 in conference play. UCA improved to 10-10 on the year, 5-4 in league games. Trevor Foss fell to 0-4 after giving up two runs on two hits and walk in one-third of an inning.
Starter Daniel Minor saw his scoreless streak snapped at 20.2 innings pitched and did not factor in the decision after giving up three runs, two of them earned, on eight hits and two walks while striking out four batters.
UCA scored a single run in the second inning to snap Minor's streak, and added another in the third for an early 2-0 lead.
The Islanders pushed across the tying runs in the fifth to make it a 2-2 score. Santiago Ruiz led off with a walk and moved to second on a single by Dan Sciantarelli. Both runners moved up a base when Drew Vest put down a bunt single to load the bases.
Marek followed with an RBI on a fielder's choice, and then an RBI ground out by Weiss evened the score at 2-2 through 5.5 innings.
UCA was able to take advantage of an error with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the inning, scoring on the very next play to make it a 3-2 lead for the Bears.
In the top of the seventh, Sciantarelli led off with a walk, and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Vest. With a runner in scoring position, Marek doubled down the left field line to plate Sciantarelli and make it a 3-3 game.
Once again the Bears responded immediately, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to regain the lead at 5-3.
The lead would hold, as the Islanders were unable to get anything going in the last two innings against UCA.
Next up for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi will be a three-game Southland Conference series starting on March 30 in Thibodaux, La. against the Nicholls Colonels.
