CORPUS CHRISTI – UTSA scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to emerge with a 7-2 victory over the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team on Saturday afternoon at Chapman Field. Horacio Correa III had four hits for the Roadrunners (9-5, 1-1 Southland) in the victory.
The Islanders (8-8, 1-1) got two hits out of Jordan Lee, but just four other base knocks in the game and just one after the first inning. Tim Keller threw six solid innings in a no-decision, allowing seven hits and two runs, while Trevor Foss picked up the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season. Clint Sharp (1-2) got the win in relief for the Roadrunners.
R.J. Perucki had two hits and three RBI for UTSA, while Casey Selsor and Colby Braddock each had two-hit days. Justin Anderson allowed five hits and one walk in a no-decision for the visitors, who outhit the Islanders 12-6 in the game.
The Islanders got out to a quick start in the bottom of the first, using three hits and an error to get out to a 2-0 lead. With one down, Drew Vest and Eric Weiss delivered back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners. Stafford Brantley followed, and the junior rolled a single through the right side to make it 1-0 in favor of the home team. After Kyle Danford reached on an error, Marc Damon drove home Weiss on a sac fly to center for a 2-0 Islanders lead.
UTSA manufactured a run in the top of the fourth off Keller, as Perucki drew a two-out bases-loaded walk to plate the first run of the game for the visitors. In the top of the sixth, the Roadrunners added another run, with a bloop single by Braddock bringing home Matthew James all the way from first to knot the score 2-2.
After UTSA snuffed out several Islanders opportunities, A&M – Corpus Christi had a golden chance in the bottom of the seventh. Lee was hit by a pitch, then Santiago Ruiz drew a walk. Jeramie Marek followed by dropping down a bunt, and Roadrunners pitcher Clint Sharp tried to gun down Lee at third, but the freshman beat it out to load the bases with nobody out. Sharp rebounded, though, getting Vest on a strikeout and inducing a 4-6-3 double play from Weiss to end the inning.
The visitors grabbed the momentum from there, delivering the decisive runs to pull ahead 7-2. After Foss retired the first batter, Selsor drew a walk and James delivered a swinging-bunt single to put two on and one out. Ryan Dalton followed, and ripped a single up the middle, plating Selsor to put the Roadrunners ahead 3-2.
Foss gave way to Jacob Dorris on the mound with Braddock at the plate. Dorris induced a comebacker on the ground, but his throw to first base sailed high for an error and allowed James to score. Perucki then ripped a single past the drawn-in infield to plate two more runs, and Correa had an RBI single later in the frame to make it 7-2. Sharp slammed the door the rest of the way as the Roadrunners finished off the victory.
The two teams will conclude their series on Sunday at 1 p.m. CDT at Chapman Field. Daniel Minor is slated to have the ball for the Islanders, while Michael Kraft gets the nod for UTSA. For in-game updates, be sure to follow the Islanders on Twitter (@CorpusBaseball).
