The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team lost a pair of games on Saturday, falling 12-6 against Dallas Baptist in the afternoon, before traveling across town to UT Arlington, where they suffered a 3-0 loss against the Mavericks.
The Islanders are now 6-6 on the season after going winless during the weekend. Dallas Baptist improved to 6-6 on the year, while UT Arlington is now 9-2 in 2012.
Daniel Minor was tagged with the loss to go to 2-1 on the year after being unable to find his control, walking five batters in four innings. The junior gave up six runs, three of them earned, on just four hits by the Patriots.
Trevor Foss took the loss against UTA, pitching six innings and giving up three runs, two of them earned, on three hits while walking five and striking out a career-high seven batters to move to 0-1 on the year.
In game one, the Islanders were able to push across the first run of the contest, with Jeramie Marek leading off the game with a walk. Eric Weiss then singled to left to move Marek to second with one out. Bobby Buckner followed, reaching on a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Marc Damon then brought Marek home on a sacrifice fly to make it a 1-0 score.
DBU answered quickly, picking up a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning on three walks and just one hit to take a 2-1 lead.
The Patriots added three unearned runs in the bottom of the second, as the Islanders had trouble defensively, committing two errors that led to the three runs and a 5-1 lead. They added a single run in the bottom of the third to extend the advantage to 6-1.
The Islanders were able to put a run on the board in the top of the fourth when Weston Montgomery drew a walk, followed by a Santiago Ruiz single to move to second. Marek then hit a fielder's choice that forced a bad throw by the Patriots second baseman that allowed Montgomery to score, making it 6-2.
In the fifth inning, the Islanders started the inning with a walk to Weiss and a Buckner double that moved Weiss to third base and put runners in scoring position. Damon then brought Weiss home on another sacrifice fly, with Buckner moving to third on the fly ball, but getting injured on a collision with the third baseman in the base line. That brought on Dan Sciantarelli to pinch run, who then scored on a Kyle Danford sacrifice fly to center to make it 6-4.
DBU put up three runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 10-4.
In the seventh, Jonathan Gonzales cut the lead to four runs with his second home run of the season, and second against DBU, to make it a 10-6 game. Damon started things off with a single to right, and after an out, Gonzales hit the first pitch he saw down the right field line for the homer.
That would be as close at Texas A&M – Corpus Christi would get however, with DBU adding a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 12-6 score.
The second game of the day was tight throughout, with UTA scoring their first run in the bottom of the first. The Mavs put a ball softly back up the middle, but Foss was unable to glove it, resulting in the batter reaching on an error. The next batter powered a double to the wall in left center field to score the runner and make it a 1-0 ball game.
The score remained the same until UTA added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 3-0.
The Islanders threatened to score in the top of the eighth, getting a runner to second with just one out, but they were unable to bring him home.
Next up for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi will be a Tuesday night game against Houston – Victoria at Chapman Field. Live stats and video will be available for the 6:00 p.m. home game.
