Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball's Daniel Minor made it two Southland Conference honors in-a-row for the team after being named the Pitcher of the Week by the league office on Tuesday. Minor followed Adam Hoelscher's honor last week as the Islanders pitching staff has earned the award the first two weeks of the season.
The junior from Dripping Springs picked up two wins on the week, tossing six innings against Houston on Tuesday for a 3-2 win, while throwing seven innings against Pac-12 member Utah on Sunday to lead the Islanders to a 7-5 victory.
"It's early in the season, but Daniel has really been a horse for us," said head coach Scott Malone. "He has been able to take the team and help pull the wagon."
Against Houston, the junior shutout the Cougars through six innings, allowing just five hits and no runs while striking out four batters and walking one for the victory.
"He threw out of the bullpen for us the first weekend," said Malone. "Then at Houston, he gave us one of four or five best starts in the Malone era to get a huge road win."
On Sunday, Minor struck out a career-high eight Utah batters while allowing three runs, only one of them earned, on five hits over seven innings. He was masterful with his control, striking out the side in the first inning to set the tone, and walking just one batter for the second-straight game.
"The day after our loss to Nebraska, he bounced back and put the early innings on his back," said Malone. "He kind of said, 'I'm just going to go out there and put up zeros so you guys can go and get the lead.'
"Daniel has been everything and more from what our expectations were."
Minor will be in action next against either Dallas Baptist or UT Arlington this weekend. The Islanders will travel for a three-game series against the Patriots on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, while finishing the weekend with a night game against the Southland Conference-opponent Mavericks at UT Arlington.
