Islanders Open Kleberg Bank College Classic Friday Against UNLV

The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team will make the short trek across town on Friday evening for the first of three games at Whataburger Field this weekend for the Kleberg Bank College Classic. The Islanders will start things off with UNLV on Friday at 6 p.m., then take on Nebraska at 7 p.m. on Saturday, while finishing off the tournament at 3 p.m. on Sunday against Utah.

The Islanders are 4-1 on the year, coming off of a 3-2 win over Houston in their first midweek contest of the year on Tuesday. Adam Hoelscher will get the start on Friday against UNLV. Last time out Hoelscher pitched a complete-game shutout for the win against Nebraska Omaha in the season opener.

UNLV is 2-2 on the year, having gone 1-2 against Loyola – Marymount in their opening series, but bouncing back with a win over nationally-ranked UC Irvine on Monday to come into the Kleberg on a high note. They will throw Joe Robinson against the Islanders on Friday. Robinson is a senior right-hander who ha started one game this year, earning a no decision after tossing 5.2 innings. He gave up three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out none.

Tim Keller gets the nod on Saturday, pitching against Nebraska after earning a no decision against UNO last Saturday. Keller pitched five innings, allowing no runs and four hits while walking two and striking out seven batters.

Nebraska is scheduled to throw Tom Lemke against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. In Lemke's one appearance this year, he pitched 2.1 innings while giving up two runs on one hit. He struck out and hitting one batter apiece. The team is 0-3 on the season after opening up against Gonzaga in a three-game series at a neutral site in Arizona.

The finale against Utah will see Daniel Minor on the mound for the Islanders. Minor is coming off of his first win of the year, beating Houston with six innings of shutout baseball. The junior gave up just five hits and one walk while striking out four Cougar batters. In two appearances this year, he has struck out eight batters in eight innings pitched.

Sunday will cap off the weekend with a game against the Utah Utes, who are 1-3 on the season. The Utes beat UC Davis 7-1 for their lone win in the four-game series on the road. The starter for Utah is expected to be Tanner Tripp, a junior, right-handed transfer who has one start for the Utes. In his start against UC Davis, Tripp was roughed up, pitching just a third of an inning. He gave up four runs on two hits, two walks and one hit-by-pitch.
