All-Star Marek Highlights Islanders in Summerball
CORPUS CHRISTI - New York Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Jeramie Marek leads the notables among the members of the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi baseball team showing strong performances this summer. Marek, an alumnus of Calallen High School, has torn it up this summer with the Hornell Dodgers of the NYCBL.
Marek is hitting .327 through 31 games, scoring 20 runs and driving in 22. The second baseman has three doubles and a triple among his 36 hits, and has also drawn an impressive 18 walks. On the basepaths, he has been just as stellar, swiping 18 bags and being caught just four times. He will represent the West Division in the league's all-star game this week.
Marek isn't the only Islander having a strong season with the Dodgers, as Omar Garcia has a .307 average through 29 games of action. On the mound, Bryce Zak is 2-1 with a 2.86 ERA, striking out 43 batters in 34 2/3 innings, while Garrett Guys has made three appearances out of the bullpen for the team.
Two Islanders saw injuries cut short their trips to the Northwoods League. SeniorsJumpy Garcia and Bobby Buckner both suffered injuries and were shut down for the summer, though both are expected to recover in time for fall ball. Michael Boyle has struck out 13 men in 10 1/3 innings for the Waterloo Bucks of the NWL.
Another Islander having a strong summer on the mound is junior Trevor Foss. The Janesville, Wis., native has a 3-2 record with a 3.50 ERA while pitching for the Denver Cougars of the Rocky Mountain Baseball League. Foss has punched out 28 men in 26 innings.
