Myles' Homer Lifts SFA to 6-5 Win Over Islanders

SAN MARCOS -

Bryson Myles' solo home run in the top of the ninth inning propelled Stephen F. Austin to a 6-5 victory over the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi baseball team on Saturday in the Southland Conference Tournament. The Lumberjacks (37-22) advance to the tournament championship game with the win, while the Islanders season wrapped up at 37-24.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi set school records for wins (37) and Southland Conference wins (19) in advancing to the final day of the SLC Tournament for the first time. The Islanders concluded their year having won 15 of their final 18 contests, and were over .500 from start to finish in the 2011 campaign.

Myles went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs, while Riley Huble went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer of his own for the Jacks. Jacob Perales hit a two-run shot in a losing effort, and Jeramie Marek went 2-for-5. Marek hit .474 for the tourney, leading the way for the Islanders. Matt Holland went 0-for-4 in his final game in an Islanders uniform, as his 17-game hitting streak was snapped in the season finale.

Alex Moshier got the win out of the pen with 1 2/3 scoreless innings for SFA, while Tanner Green was carded with the loss for the Islanders. Zack Taylor allowed just seven hits in 7 1/3 innings in a no-decision for Stephen F. Austin.

SFA drew first blood with a solo tally in the first. Myles drew a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third on a flyout to left. Jarid Scarafiotti then grounded a single through the left side to plate Myles for a 1-0 advantage.

In the second, SFA struck for three more. A leadoff single by Hunter Dozier was followed by Huble's two-run homer, a lofting shot to left that carried into the screen for his first longball of the season to make it 3-0. A Myles RBI groundout later in the inning made it a four-run lead for the Lumberjacks.

Taylor was dominant on the other side, setting down the first 13 men he faced. But then the Islanders erupted out of nowhere, plating five runs on six hits in the bottom of the fifth to gain a one-run lead. Chris Vergne started the rally with a double to left center, and Perales followed by ripping a fastball over the center-field wall for a two-run homer to make it 4-2.

Caleb Marx followed with a single, and then Weston Montgomery drove a double to right center to make it a 4-3 game. Two batters later, Bobby Buckner drilled a triple to dead center to plate Montgomery and tie the score 4-4. Marek followed by driving a double to right center to make it 5-4.

But SFA bounced right back, tying the game in the top of the sixth. With two down, Huble and Bryce Cummings hit consecutive singles to start the rally. Michael Haynes then drew a walk to load the bases, and Myles was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run. That set up Myles' heroics in the ninth.

The Lumberjacks now advance to the SLC Tournament Championship, where they will face the winner of this afternoon's contest between Texas State and Nicholls. Game time is set for 6 p.m. in San Marcos, and it will be carried live on Southland TV, which is available on KTOV Channel 21 in Corpus Christi.
