Cardinals Silence Islanders in Series Finale
Albert Lott and Machon Trimm combined to allow two hits and the Lamar offense exploded for 10 runs in a 10-0 victory over the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi baseball team on Sunday in seven innings. The Cardinals (22-13, 9-6 Southland) took the series two games to one from the visiting Islanders (22-14, 7-8).
Aaron Buchanan and Wade Mathis each had three hits for Lamar, while Ted Zentek drove in three runs. The Cardinals scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh to finish off the game. Trey Hernandez and Matt Holland had the only two hits of the game for the Islanders.
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard first for the second straight day, tagging starter Todd Simko for two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Lamar put together four hits in the frame, with Wade Mathis singling home a run, which was followed up by Joey Latulippe's double to the right-field corner, making the score 2-0.
Still down 2-0, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi loaded the bases in the top of the fifth inning with three straight walks with one out. Santiago Ruiz, Sean Washington and Jeramie Marek drew bases on balls in consecutive fashion to chase Lott from the game. Trimm was able to put out the fire, though, getting Drew Vest to fly out to center, followed by Hernandez bouncing out to pitcher to end the inning.
That turned out to be the last chance for the visitors, as Lamar added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off Roy Ferdin. Pinch-hitter Cameron Campbell drove in the first run with a single to left, which was followed by Buchanan getting a single through the drawn-in infield to make it 4-0 Cardinals.
The home squad broke open the contest in the bottom of the seventh. After plating one run, two singles and a walk loaded the bases, and Zentek cleared them with a double, making it 8-0. Jeff Abt then tripled and Mathis drove in the final run on a single to end the shortened game.
The Islanders return home on Tuesday, April 12, for a 2 p.m. contest against UTPA at Chapman Field. Live video and statistics will be available on GoIslanders.com.
