Islanders Win Sixth Straight, 6-2 over McNeese State
went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi baseball team to a 6-2 win over McNeese State on Saturday. Ian Campbell pitched seven gutsy innings to lead the Islanders (18-8, 5-3 Southland) to their sixth straight victory.
Hernandez and Jeramie Marek were the only Islanders with multiple hits in the game, but the home squad made the most of the opportunities it was presented in posting the victory. Seth Granger and Blake Ellender each had multi-hit games in the loss for the Cowboys (13-11, 4-5).
After a shaky start, allowing two hits, two walks and two runs before recording the second out of the first inning, Campbell (4-1) settled in to scatter nine hits and put zeroes on the board every frame after the first. The senior forced the Cowboys to strand 11 runners in his seven innings. Adam Hoelscher came on to pitch two hitless, scoreless innings to finish the game. Matt Click (2-2) picked up the loss with seven solid frames for McNeese.
The Cowboys struck with two runs in the top of the first, but the Islanders responded immediately with two of their own in the bottom half. Weston Montgomery drew a leadoff walk, and then Bobby Buckner reached on an error, sending Montgomery to third. Hernandez followed with an RBI groundout for the first run, and two batters later Jacob Perales ripped an RBI single to center for a 2-0 Islanders advantage.
McNeese threatened on several occasions over the next few innings, but in every instance, Campbell was able to hold them at bay. The Cowboys stranded two in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth to keep the score at 2-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Islanders mounted a two-out rally to take a 4-2 advantage. Buckner delivered a single to right and promptly stole second. That brought Hernandez to the plate, and the senior ripped a 1-1 pitch into left center for his 10th double of the season and a 3-2 Islanders lead. Matt Holland followed by lofting a flyball to no-man's land in center for a single to score Hernandez for a 4-2 advantage.
In the seventh, Hernandez struck again to make it 6-2. Montgomery led off the inning with a single, and two batters later the big righty came to the plate. After working the count to 3-2, the first baseman destroyed a Click offering, lining it far over the wall in left for his 44th career homer to push the Islanders up by four.
Campbell continued to strand runners in the sixth and seventh, then gave way to Hoelscher. The lefty pitched a 1-2-3 eighth, and then set down the side in the ninth to finish off the game.
The Islanders and Cowboys will wrap up their three-game set on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Whataburger Field. Moody alum Justin Meza will throw for the Islanders against McNeese's Phil Parcell.
