On the strength of a three-game sweep of Nicholls, the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi baseball team has climbed into the top 50 of the Ratings Percentage Index, according to RPI gurus Warren Nolan and Boyd Nation.
Nation ranks the Islanders 49th in the country, while Nolan's formula has the team 50th. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi is now 15-8 on the year, including an impressive 9-2 start on the road. At 15-8, the Islanders are off to their best start since the 2003 season, when they finished 33-17.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi's strong start is just part of the early success of the Southland Conference this season. The Islanders are joined by Texas State and Southeastern Louisiana in the top 50, and the Southland currently ranks eighth as a conference in the RPI.
The Islanders have played eight teams in the RPI top 50, going 3-5 with wins over Texas (20), Oregon State (23) and Texas Tech (47). Seven of the Islanders' eight losses have come to teams in the top 80 of the RPI, with the lone exception the defeat to Connecticut, who started the season ranked in the top 10.
