Texas State jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and never looked back in a 14-1, seven-inning win over the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi baseball team on Sunday at Whataburger Field. Jeramie Marek went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.
Jacob Perales also had two hits for the Islanders (8-5, 0-3 Southland). Brett Carnline was carded with the loss after surrendering five runs, four earned, in his two innings of work. Colton Turner collected the win for the Bobcats (9-2, 3-0), as he scattered six hits and surrendered just one run in his 5 1/3 innings. He added nine strikeouts to improve to 3-0 on the year.
Bret Atwood and Kyle Kubitza each scored four runs for Texas State, as the top four hitters in the Bobcats order accounted for 12 runs. Jeff McVaney drove in four runs and Joey Fuda added three RBI.
The Bobcats scored two in the first and three in the second off Carnline. A Kubitza RBI infield single plated the first run and McVaney added a second RBI base knock in the first frame for a 2-0 lead. In the second, Kubitza added a two-run single and Casey Kalenkosky added an RBI single to make it 5-0 in favor of the visitors.
After Adam Hoelscher punched out the side in the third, he ran into control troubles in the fourth. Three Bobcats scored via the walk in the frame, then Tanner Green came on and surrendered a two-run single to make it 10-0 in favor of Texas State. The Bobcats added a solo tally in the top of the fifth.
The Islanders cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. Matt Holland led off with a single, and a bad exchange at second on a ground ball left Logan Nottebrok at first and Holland on second with nobody down. After a flyout, Marek ripped a single up the middle to plate Nottebrok to make it 11-1, but reliever Travis Ballew came on and got the next two batters to thwart the rally. Texas State plated three runs in the top of the seventh to result in the final score, as the game was called after seven frames via the run rule.
