Hoosiers Knock off Islanders at Kleberg Bank College Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Jacob Perales had two hits, including his second home run of the season, but hot Indiana hitting and bullpen work led to a 14-3 Hoosier victory over the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi baseball team on Friday night at the Kleberg Bank College Classic. The Islanders (5-1) fell for the first time this season in the game.

The Islanders rallied to within 4-3 in the bottom of the third, but a double play took the wind out of their sails, and from then on the Hoosiers outhit the home squad 14-2. Ty Downing and Justin Cureton each had two hits for IU (2-2).

"Obviously, it's not what you want to put a dud out there, but it's a 56-game schedule and we're going to be a good team," head coach Scott Malone said. "I loved the way we hit early with guys on base, but we couldn't get the big hit to get back to even. I felt like if we got back to even we'd be alright, but we just couldn't get there."

Indiana got on the board first with four unearned runs in the opening frame. With runners at the corners and two down, Dustin DeMuth hit a high chopper for an infield single to plate the first run, then Dan Sciantarelli misplayed a ball that resulted in two more runs for the visitors. The Hoosiers picked up run number four on a wild pitch.

The Islanders responded with two runs in the second. Jumpy Garcia led off with a walk and Perales was hit by a pitch. After a Sean Washington bunt single and a strikeout, Drew Vest earned a bases-loaded walk for the first run for the home squad. Logan Nottebrok followed with an RBI fielder's choice to trim the deficit to 4-2 with two innings in the books.

The third started off with plenty of promise, as Perales ripped a leadoff solo homer that curled around the pole to make it 4-3. The Islanders then loaded the bags with a Matt Holland single and two walks, but a strikeout and double play thwarted the momentum with the Islanders still down a run.

The Hoosiers capitalized, scoring a pair in the top of the fourth, as a walk and a single put runners at the corners. A Michael Basil sac fly gave the visitors a 5-3 lead and Alex Dickerson added an RBI single to push it to 6-3.

Both bullpens put up zeroes over the next several innings, but the Hoosier bats finally got going in the seventh. Indiana plated four runs on four hits in the seventh, then added a pair more on a Ty Downing homer to make it 12-3. Indiana scored two more in the ninth to result in the final score.

Meanwhile, the Hoosier bullpen continued to silence the Islanders bats, at one point setting down 12 in a row. Indiana has now tossed 19 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings out of the pen.

The Islanders return to action on Saturday for the second day of the Kleberg Bank College Classic. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will take on two-time national champion Oregon State at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Whataburger Field, while Indiana takes on UConn at 2 p.m.
