Trey Hernandez has been selected 2010 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Player of the Year, the Corpus Christi Hooks announced. Hernandez will be recognized at the Seventh Annual South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet on Thursday, February 3, at the Omni Bayfront Hotel in Corpus Christi.
Hernandez, the former Robstown star, garnered a Second Team All-Southland Conference selection as a junior first baseman. He led the conference in slugging percentage (.707) and tied for the league lead in home runs (17). Hernandez was also among the Southland's top 10 in five other major offensive categories: RBIs (63 - T3), on-base percentage (.467 - 5th), total bases (135 - 5th), walks (39 - 7th) and batting average (.361 - 8th).
Hernandez drew attention to himself and the Islanders program when he was named the Southland Conference Player of the Week and the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week to open the 2010 season (Feb. 22-28). Hernandez batted .393 with four home runs and 16 RBI in six games, including a two-HR, four-hit, six-RBI performance against Nebraska February 26.
Hernandez was also named First Team Preseason All-Southland Conference today. The senior automatically earned the distinction by earning Second Team recognition last year and returning for the 2011 season.
