Islanders Baseball Adds Three More to Class of 2012

CORPUS CHRISTI -

Head Coach Scott Malone and the staff of the Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi baseball team have announced the signing of three additional players to National Letters of Intent for the incoming class of 2012. Timothy Beard (Canberra, Australia/Western Nebraska CC), Jake Dziubczynski (Chandler, Ariz./Central Arizona Community College) and Mike Velasquez (Robstown, Texas/Robstown) will join the three players who signed earlier this month.

"These three young men take the fall recruiting class to another level," Malone said. "At the end of the day, difference makers are found on the mound. For us to round out the class with the most talented senior pitcher in our city as well as two polished and experienced junior college pitchers is a great win for us in recruiting. Coach Ramirez has done an excellent job stockpiling talent for the future of Islanders Baseball."

Beard is a 6-foot-2, left-handed pitcher who will join the Islanders after a stellar freshman season playing for head coach Mike Jones at Western Nebraska. He picked up first team all-conference honors in 2010 after going 9-2 on the mound with a 1.95 ERA. The native Australian was also selected to the Region 9 All-Star Game in Peoria, Ariz.

"Tim is a proven starting pitcher and winner at the collegiate level," Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Chris Ramirez said. "He has a very loose arm with the ability to command three quality pitches. Tim is a very high character young man that will not only excel on the field but also in the classroom."

Dziubczynski comes to the Island University after two years at Central Arizona Community College under John Wente. One of 12 players from the school to sign with a Division I baseball team, the lefty was one of the top two starters for a CACC squad that went 46-20 in 2010. The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder went 7-3 on the bump with a 1.76 ERA in 61 1/3 innings of work for the school. He was a 38th round draft choice of the Detroit Tigers in the 2010 MLB First Year Player Draft and played in the Alaska Collegiate Summer League last year.

"Jake comes from one of the highest profile junior colleges in the country," Ramirez said. "He will bring an immediate swagger to our program and a winning mentality. We will look for Jake to fit into the top of our rotation right away."

Velasquez elected to stay close to home with his signing, as he joins the Islanders after playing for Elias Vasquez at Robstown. The lefty can play both at first base and on the mound, and was a first team all-district and honorable mention all-state selection after his junior season. He led Robstown to a 23-9 record, a district championship and to the regional semifinals in 2010.

"Mike is one of the top prospects in the Corpus Christi area," Ramirez said. "We will continue to focus our recruiting on doing everything we can to make Texas A&M - Corpus Christi a great option for the best players from our area to go to college."

This trio joins the group of three who signed earlier this month. Trevor Belicek (Uvalde, Texas/Uvalde), Jordan Lee (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) and Tyler Schnuriger (San Antonio, Texas/Douglas MacArthur) also signed with Texas A&M - Corpus Christi and will join the team for the 2011-12 school year.
