CAMPBELL, HERNANDEZ LATEST TO MAKE ALL-STAR TEAMS
Rising seniors Ian Campbell and Trey Hernandez have become the lastest Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball players chosen to represent their summer league teams and the Islanders in each league's all-star game.
Pitching for the Eau Claire (Wisc.) Express, Campbell has been one of the top pitchers in the Northwoods League all season. The righty shares the team lead with three wins and has posted a team-best 0.80 ERA in 33-2/3 innings of work. His ERA is second in the league.
Hernandez has been selected to compete in the Coastal Plains League All-Star Game on July 20 in Forest City, N.C., representing the Florence (S.C.) RedWolves. The Islander slugger is also one of 16 players to be chosen for the league's home run derby the night before. The Robstown native is first on his team and tenth in the league with a .325 batting average. He is third in the league with 33 RBI, while his four home runs are second on his team and 11th in the CPL.
Other Islanders have already competed in their leagues all-star games.
Marc Damon, who leads his team with five saves, tossed a perfect inning of relief with two strikeouts in the California Collegiate league earlier this week. Bobby Buckner also played in the game going 0-for-1.
Roman Madrid tossed an inning of relief in the Texas Collegiate League All-Star game that ended in a 7-7 tie. He is 3-1 with two saves and a 2.41 ERA for the Victoria Generals. He is fourth in the league in wins and fourth in saves. While not selected for the all-star game, Jeramie Marek is currently batting .306 for the Generals.
Several of the teams the Islanders are playing for this summer are receiving national rankings in the PerfectGame Crosschecker Top 30. Campbell's Eau Claire was ranked fifth nationally entering the week, while Hernandez's RedWolves are 11th. Victoria is the lone Texas Collegiate League team in the rankings coming at 22nd.
