ISLANDERS' HERNANDEZ EARNS SECOND TEAM ALL-SOUTHLAND

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi junior slugger Trey Hernandez has been named Second-Team All-Southland Conference by a vote of the league's head coaches and sports information directors the league announced on Monday.

Hernandez finished the season as one of just two players in the league ranked in the top 10 in hitting and top five in both home runs and runs batted in. The Robstown native finished the season as the league's co-leader with 17 home runs and now holds the school record with 39 career home runs. He was second in the league with 63 runs batted in upping his Islander career record for RBI to 152. Hernandez's team-best .361 average was ninth in the league.

During the season, the Islander first baseman was named the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and Southland Conference Player of the Week in early March. Hernandez earned the honor after blasting four home runs in four games and driving in 14 runs. He had two-home runs against Nebraska driving in a career-high six runs. He was 10-of-20 at the plate with a slugging percentage of 1.100 and a .524 on-base percentage.

UT Arlington's Michael Choice, a projected first-round pick in this summer's Major League Baseball amateur draft, was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year, while Carson Smith of Texas State was named both the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. Chad Sheppard was the Southland Conference Relief Pitcher of the Year, while Ryan Dalton of UTSA, who shared the home run lead with Hernandez was the top freshman. Stephen F. Austin's Johnny Cardenas was named the Southland Conference Coach of the Year.
