Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (20-33-1, 10-22-1) closed the 2010 season with a 16-4 loss to Sam Houston State Saturday afternoon. Junior Trey Hernandez went 2-for-4 with a home run driving in two runs for the Islanders.
The Bearkats (19-36, 11-22) scored 11 runs in the first four innings off four different Islander pitchers. They were 12-of-20 in the first four innings. After a back-to-back one-run doubles in the top of the first, Jordan Bunch hit his second home run of the series to make it 4-0.
After a single run in the second and two in the third, the Bearkats plated four unearned runs off Brandon Orr in the fourth. Orr struck out the first hitter he faced and then fanned the second, however, the ball was thrown away by Omar Garcia on a dropped third strike and later with two outs SHSU went on to add four runs.
Trailing 11-0 the Islanders started to rally in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring four runs to make it 11-4. Garcia opened the sixth with a double which was followed up by Hernandez belting a shot deep to right center. It was his 17th of the season bringing his career total to 39. With one away, Cory Ege singled and scored on a home run to right by Chris Vergne it was his fifth of the season.
The Bearkats closed out the game with five runs in the seventh via the 10-run rule.
Roman Madrid suffered the loss for the Islanders allowing four runs on four hits in an inning of work. Brandon Kimbrel moved to 4-1 on the year after giving up just four runs on eight hits in 5-1/3 innings.
Payton Wisener and Braeden Riley each finished 5-for-5 with a combined seven RBI and six runs scored. Chris Andreas finished 3-of-6 with three RBI and extended his hitting streak to 26 games.
