Looking to avoid its third sweep at the hands of UT Arlington in as many years, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team gave up the game's first 10 runs and never recovered dropping a 19-4 decision in eight innings at Chapman Field on Sunday.

With the loss, the Islanders moved to 18-26 on the season and are 8-16 in the Southland Conference. The Mavs move to 23-22 on the year and 16-8 in the SLC.

UTA took control of the game with a pair of big innings scoring six in third and four in the fifth.

With one out in the third, the Mavs turned up the offense on Islander starter Chris Pena (1-4). After Nick Orr singled and Jordan Vaughn walked, Michael Choice lined a two-run double. Preston Beck made it back-to-back doubles as he drove in Choice and scored on a single by Chad Comer. Jesse Payne capped the inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch.

Pena started strong, but struggled in the third and would leaving after three complete. He was credited with six runs on hits and a walk.

In the fifth, UTA rallied for four runs with two away. Reliever Marc Damon, who retired the first five batters he faced, got in trouble with back-to-back walks with two outs. After an RBI singly by Payne, Brian Nephew lined out a two-out double to left. Matt Holland attempted a sliding grab but was unable to make the play. Nephew came home on a single by Cody Dyvig.

Caleb Marx put the Islanders on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. Jacob Perales drew a one out walk from Bawcom and went to third on a single by Cory Ege. Marx then lofted a sacrifice fly to right to make it 10-1.

After Nephew drove in two more runs to make it 12-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Islanders escaped the run rule in the bottom of the seventh. With one away, Perales doubled and scored on a ground-rule double by Ege. With two away, Jeremy Pinder drove in Ege with a single to left to make it 12-3.

UTA would score seven in the top of the eighth off Roman Madrid and Trenton Irwin to take a 19-3 lead. Payne, who finished 5-of-5 with five RBI, started the scoring with a three-run triple. Choice would cap the scoring later.

A&M-Corpus Christi finished with 11 hits. Four players - Trey Hernandez, Omar Garcia, Perales, and Ege - had two hits apiece. UTA had 20 hits led by Payne's five and Choice's three. Five others had two hits apiece.

The Islanders are off until traveling to Central Arkansas nextweekend for a three-game series in Conway, Ark.
