ISLANDERS END STREAK WITH IMPRESSIVE 17-1 WIN
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team snapped out of its six-game losing streak scoring a season-high 17 runs in a 17-1 victory over Texas-Pan American Tuesday afternoon at Chapman Field.
The Islanders pounded out 16 hits and took advantage of eight walks and four errors to post its highest run total since the 2008 season in a 19-16 win over Stephen F. Austin. With the win, the Islanders move to 11-14 on the season, while UTPA falls to 9-8. A&M-Corpus Christi scored in six separate innings jumping out to 13-0 lead after four innings.
"We needed a day like today where the ball seemed to bounce our way," said Islander head coach Scott Malone. "When you get in a rut like we were in everyone begins second guessing themselves. You just have to keep working and ride it out until things turnaround."
Cory Ege and Bobby Buckner each finished a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Ege was 4-for-4 with a triple, double, two singles, a pair of walks and four runs scored. Buckner drove in three runs and scored twice as he recorded a triple, double and single. Caleb Mark also had three singles with two runs batted in, while Chris Vergne crossed the plate three times.
The Islanders were also solid on the mound on a staff day. TAMUCC threw six different pitchers combining to allow one run on four hits. Ian Campbell allowed two early hits in the first but left after three complete innings without permitting a run or another hit. Campbell moved to 3-3 with the win.
Chris Pena pitched a hitless inning before Marc Damon entered. Damon allowed the lone run on hits, but struck out four in two innings of work. Jake Olier, Trenton Irwin and Roman Madrid combined to allow one hit over the final three innings.
"Ian came out and put up some zeroes off the bat," said Malone. "He gave us a chance early. All of the pitchers did a good job of throwing strikes low. This is a hitter's park and we know if you throw high strikes you lose. We were able to keep it low."
Trey Hernandez started the scoring with a two-run double in the first pushing his league-lead RBI total to 38 in 25 games. Hernandez made it 3-0 when he scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Vergne.
After Buckner tripled and scored on a grounder by Weston Montgomery in the second, Ege scored with two outs on a single to left by Marx. Buckner drove in two more runs in the third with a ground-rule double. The switch hitter scored on a triple by Ege.
In the fourth, A&M-Corpus Christi posted five runs combining four singles with three walks and a hit batter. Buckner, Perales and Marx each picked up RBI in the inning.
Troy Green (1-2) suffered the loss as he was charged with eight earned runs in 2-2/3 innings on eight hits.
The Islanders will return to action on Thursday when they open a three-game Southland Conference set with UTSA. Thursday and Friday's games will be at Whataburger Field at 6:30 p.m. with Saturday's finale at Chapman at 2 p.m.
