ISLANDERS TO SPEND SUMMER ON DIAMOND

A handful of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball players will spend the summer working on their games in various collegiate leagues across the country.

Three players will be headed to the northeast to participate in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Sophomore Trey Hernandez and freshman Chris Famiglietti will be teammates making their swings for New Bedford Baysox. Brett Gibson will also be in the Northeast with the sophomore pitcher wearing the Pittsfield American Defender uniform.

Junior pitcher Jake Liedka is set to spend the summer with the Brazos Valley Bombers in the Texas Collegiate League. Cory Blair, who redshirted this past season, will play for the Nashville Navigators in the Sandlott League in Tennessee.

"Playing over the summer is a great experience for these guys," said Islander head baseball coach Scott Malone. "First, the more you play the better chance you have to improve and it gives the players the opportunity to play at a different level. It also allows them to see different coaching styles which can help as well.

"Secondly, it is a great life experience beyond the game. I think living with hosts families and experiencing new things will help them mature."
