The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team closes out the 2009 season this with three-game set at Sam Houston State. The series opens on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

The Islanders will set out to finish the season a positive note after being eliminated from Southland Conference Tournament consideration last weekend. They are 8-22 in the conference and 17-36 overall. A strong finish by the Islanders could propel them to a ninth-place finish in the SLC.

A&M-Corpus Christi, which has lost seven straight games, will be attempting to keep the Bearkats from improving on their seventh seed in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament at Whataburger Field. Sam Houston is 16-13 in the league and based on weekend results could climb to as high as third.

Last season, the Islanders won the regular-season series 2-1 at Whataburger Field. In the opening game, A&M-Corpus Christi rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the bottom of the ninth to win 6-5. The ‘Kats would avenge the Islanders series win in the postseason defeating the Islanders on two occasions in the Southland Conference Tournament.

Jeramie Marek enters the series on a high for the Islanders. The Calallen freshman enters the final weekend with a 19-game hitting streak and a team-best .333 average. Marek's streak is tied for third longest in the program's history. Martin Parra is second on the team in hitting with a .325 average, while Stephen Flora and Justin Greiner are hitting .311 and .303, respectively.

The Islanders will start freshman Phillip Garcia on Thursday, senior Brett Gips on Friday and sophomore Brett Gibson on Saturday. All three will be making their first starts at A&M-Corpus Christi.
