RALLY COMES UP SHORT VERSUS NO. 16 FROGS
FORT WORTH The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi rallied to
within a run of No. 16 TCU on Wednesday after falling behind by
six, but the Horned Frogs scored twice in the eighth for a 10-7 win
at Lupton Stadium.
The Islanders drop to 14-28 with the loss heading into this weekend's three-game set with Central Arkansas at Chapman Field beginning Friday at 2 p.m. TCU improves to 25-11 with the win.
Down 8-2 heading into the sixth inning, the Islanders plated four runs in the top of the inning and one in the seventh to make it an 8-7 game.
In the sixth, Stephen Flora led off the inning with a double to left greeting Walker Kelly. With one away, Kelly hit Jacob Perales and walked Ernie Olivarez to load the bases. Flora crossed the play as Brycen Bell drew a walk to force Kelly from the game.
Islander pinch hitter Omar Garcia continued the frame with a single through the left-side field off Kaleb Merck. After Jeramie Marek went don looking, Jacob Perez ripped a two-run single down the line in left.
With one away in the seventh, Trey Hernandez singled to right-center field and stole second. Ernie Olivarez picked up his second RBI with a double to left driving in Hernandez.
After leaving runners on the corners with back-to-back singles with two away in the eighth by Jonathan Reyes and Martin Parra, TCU sealed the win with a pair of runs in the bottom of the stanza. With one away, Jacob Liedka gave up a single to Brett Medlin and walked Matt Vern. Both would scored on a two-out double off Hernandez by Bryan Holaday.
TCU jumped on the board in the bottom of the first on a two-run single by Chris Ellington.
A&M-Coprus Christi tied the game in the top of the second. Justin Greiner and Perales reached on back-to-back doubles. Olivarez drove in Greiner with a single, while Perales plated on an error on the same play.
The Horned Frogs took the lead for good with a pair of unearned runs in the second and three in the third off Justin Grota. Matt Curry reached on an error in left by Jeramie Marek. Curry scored on a single by Jason Coats.
In the third, Carpenter was hit by a pitch from Grota and stole second. He scored on an error on a double by Ellington. Ellington crossed the plate after a balk and error by Grota. Coats greeted Trevor Foss with a single up the middle to make it a 7-2 contest.
Featherson led off the fourth with a single and stole second. He made it an 8-2 game on a single by Ellington.
Grota (2-3) took the loss for the Islanders allowing seven runs with four earned on four hits in 2-1/3 innings. A&M-Corpus Christi used six relievers in the game with the foursome of Foss, Andrew Longoria, Matt Hudec and Bryant Sparkman tossed 4-2/3 innings of four-hit baseball allowing a run.
Steven Maxwell (3-2) earned the win in a staff effort. Eric Marshall earned his fourth save of the season.
The Islanders out-hit TCU 11 to 10. Ten different TAMUCC players had a hit led by Olivarez with two. Marek extended his hitting streak to a team-best nine. Ellington led the Horned Frogs with three hits and three RBI.
